\nI wrote “Purely Canadian” for Canada Day, July 1, 2006. The Canada Day Girl<\/em> was a small sculpture that I created as a giveaway draw prize to a “winning” applicant visitor at my July 1 artist table at Galt Gardens in Lethbridge. I displayed BGP books, rock art, handmade paper, sculptures and featured my handmade cards with my shorter Canada Day verse. I also gave away handcut red leather maple leafs.<\/p>\n

It seems appropriate to reprint it in honour of Canadian pride during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.<\/p>\n

In quiet Canadian village streets
\nin bustling Canadian city beats
\nour country matures, visions endure.
\nhuman rights secure, landscapes grandeur,
\ntapestries unfurl, dreams most pure
\n— dreams, most pure.<\/p>\n

Our dreams are plentiful;
\nour peace international.
\nQuiet Canadian dreamers herald
\na multicultural world.
\nGold — and forever, green,
\nour colourful, native land stands proud.
\nCanada is a sunrise forever,
\neveryone’s dreams are allowed,
\ndreams, most pure
\n— dreams, most pure.<\/p>\n

Canadian sunrise pours light,
\nwindy arms wave hope.
\nthere is an unbreakable,
\nwar-resistant slope
\nto the reason that blows over our empire.
\nKids become dreamers—their desires set on fire
\nCanadian heroes do inspire,
\npersonalities that they admire,
\nCanadian experience they acquire.
\nthey learn they can always trust our country
\nas they climb on the top of grace.
\nthey see the world with a different face—
\nWe all learn: to love, we’re able;
\nthat impossible, thought possible, is probable.
\nCanadians are not afraid; we’re not outplayed;
\nOur fears assuaged, our courage portrayed,
\nwe are the queens of creation.
\nIn a rich, fertile, noble nation,
\nour dreams endure
\n— dreams, most pure.<\/p>\n

When the heart calls, home follows.
\nthe heart of our country bellows
\nof a great democracy;
\nfeeling faith, we stay.
\nOur satisfied minds feel its absolute sweetness.
\nDarkness turns to light, every train in the night is a witness.
\nAll we really want to do is stay home.
\nOur country is a touchstone—foreigners drawn to its safety zone.
\nA rhythm of mercy washes between our oceans;
\nthey are less frightened, their pain lightens.
\nIn our rich, fertile, noble nation,
\ndreams hold allure;
\ntheir dreams, they can procure.<\/p>\n

Citizens know they are on the eve of construction.
\nFor what we learn in Canada is a song
\nfor the weary, our country
\nis the shelter for storms coming.
\nthe strong aren’t the only who remain alive.
\nCruel and unfair climate teaches us to survive.
\nWe find, in our country, a paradise of hope.
\nWe are under its spell, a magical scope.
\nFor all we need is to choose to believe
\nin every shadow, the darkness will leave.
\nAt its very edge, is an end to the dark.
\nIn our world, there’s no need to cry;
\nIn our world, there’s hope for all oppressed;
\nIn our world, terror and pain escaped.
\nthere’s no fear, days and nights hold safety here.
\nSurrender to the magic of our paradise.
\nLike a tattoo, Canada’s landscape writes to your heart
\nGets under your skin with a colourful kaleidoscope of art.
\nIt is a place so holy, God lives here.
\nAs Canadians sons rise, hopes appear.
\nIn quiet Canadian village streets

Canada’s landscape writes to my heart. The blaze of light from unforgettable, healing ocean sunsets and arousing sunrises warms me; magical memories of mountain scenery move me; glorious golden grain grabs my gaze.<\/p>\n

This land is so holy, God lives here. Tapestries of my country unfurl the purest of dreams: Peace, Freedom, Health, Safety. Instilled and enduring values of strength and courage lie in this Canadian who chooses to believe that the impossible, thought possible, is probable.<\/p>\n
