Typically, a sign is something that suggests the presence or existence of something else; it is a perceptible indication of something not immediately apparent. To study the way signs work, semiotic<\/em>s, a perspective on reality and experience developed. \u00a0A large global group of semiotician scholars delve into the writings of Charles S. Peirce (pronounced “purse”) to understand his classification of signs.<\/p>\n

Here, I present the comparison of John Deely\u2019s spiral <\/strong>of semiosis with Vinicius Romanini\u2019s solenoid <\/strong> of semiosis can shed light on Peirce\u2019s classification, as suggested by Gary\u00a0Fuhrman. \u00a0Fuhrman’s \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Gnoxic Studies: Charles S. Peirce\u00a0<\/span>pages <\/a>provides Peirce texts, notes, Fuhrman’s discussions with extensive studies of Peirce’s phaneroscopy and concept of information.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Deely’s “Spiral” Semiosis<\/h2>\n

Deely is a Professor of Philosophy at the Center for Thomistic Studies of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, whose \u00a0main research concerns the role of semiosis in mediating objects and things, specifically investigating the manner in which experience is a dynamic structure woven of triadic relations whose elements or terms (representamens, significates, and interpretants) interchange positions and roles over time in the\u00a0spiral<\/strong>\u00a0of semiosis.<\/p>\n

From\u00a02006\u20132007, Deely was Executive Director of the Semiotic Society of America and in 2008, he presented “A Sign is What?” video (48 minutes) as part of\u00a0\u00a0the 33rd SSA (Seimiotic Society of America) Annual Meeting on\u00a0Oct. 18, 2008. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
