What qualities make up a perfect friendship?<\/p>\n

\n

A perfect and absolute friendship holds a reciprocal desire for\u00a0each to have the best life they can possibly have. When the best\u00a0course of action helps one and hurts the other, compromise must\u00a0take place. This compromise should include clear communication.\u00a0Communication is difficult, if not impossible when stressful\u00a0situations reduce the energy of one friend to listen to the other\u00a0who needs to be heard.<\/p>\n

Time constraints can place added stress to\u00a0the situation\u2014no time to wait for the stress to be reduced so that communication can freely take place. \u00a0One sometimes must simply make a decision and use an appropriate compromise with the friend’s needs in mind, doing the\u00a0best that they can for them. If it turns out to be the wrong\u00a0decision, at least you can feel good about trying to do the right\u00a0thing.<\/p>\n

\n

If the friend does not understand, one wonders if the\u00a0relationship was as reciprocal as one first believed. Yet, one\u00a0should never assume the worst or take personally the\u00a0actions or nonactions that can simply\u00a0be a continuation of the stress.\u00a0 Stressful conditions make it difficult to take the time to listen well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

The concept of friendship was discussed at length by Aristotle. \u00a0Various types of friendships were outlined. \u00a0The perfect and\u00a0absolute friendship was given the description, telophilia<\/em>. \u00a0I\u00a0think about the word often. \u00a0I’m lucky enough to have some people\u00a0in my life who I feel have my best interest at heart and I know\u00a0they feel that I also have theirs.<\/p>\n

\n

There have been people in my life who I thought of as very close\u00a0friends, but I have learned that wishing doesn’t make it so or\u00a0keep it so. \u00a0Communication is a key element in making a good\u00a0friendship work otherwise, actions may occur unwittingly without\u00a0understanding situations going on in each person’s life. \u00a0Both\u00a0individuals must be willing to do what is in the best interest of\u00a0the other and to do so involves continuing to speak honestly\u00a0with one another, or the relationship falls apart.<\/p>\n
