3 Dimensions Sculpture

Two of my art pieces, Kiitokiiksi and Shadow Dancers, will be included in the 3 Dimensions Sculpture Exhibit (Sept. 28 to 30, 2012).

Kiitokiiksi is a prairie chicken dancer sculpture made this year with advice and assistance of Blackfoot artisans, Rodney and Lorilei Medicine Crane. In particular, Rodney created a beautiful crow foot necklace and Lorilei created a ball and provided a stone stick that she recommended that I paint. They provided many critical materials for the regalia design such as a small piece of deer skin that forms the basis for the head roach, Swainson’s Hawk tail feathers, goat fur remnants, and other leather for the footwear.

Through creating this piece, I enjoyed the process of learning more about the Blackfoot culture and appreciate the sharing of materials, stories, and information.

Conception of this piece comes from the annual Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park 2009 Chicken Dance competition (June 20 – 21, 2009). A look at past regalia from Glenbow Museum photos helped inspire the regalia.

  1. Your work is so interesting, mel. It is always full of information and a great learning opportunity. I really get that feeling any time we connect for whatever reason. I am fortunate to have so many ways we can connect. It is unfortunate when daily living interrupts wherever I’d like to follow you.
A very impressive lady, you are.
