Mokatosi (September)
multimedia, featuring ammonite, birch, vinyl, artist’s hair, copolymer
2013
Patience is required to see a surprising beauty in all things. I examine explore, and rework toss-away materials of unseen value: dryer lint, sawdust, vinyl record tape, etc. I rework and convert them using new materials (co-polymers). I draw from my admiration of the beauty of lines and shapes exhibited by dancers.
Mokatosi (September) is the second in my sculpture series of Chicken dancers where I seek to capture agile poses such as the exaggerated antics of the Chicken dancers. Mokatosi‘s core is vinyl tape. The sculpture features birch, my hair, and ammonite. Wood patterns and hair tell a story of its owner’s life. Blending the tree’s and my life story with that of a native dancer expresses a tale that speaks to my core. As an artist for peace, I search for ways to motivate movement along an earth-healing path, encouraging myself and others to give a second gl/chance towards those things they typically push aside.
