An impressive line-up of poets will be at the Owl’s Nest Books in Calgary on Sept. 29. This is “An Evening of Poetry: about family and friends” arranged and hosted by Bruce Hunter.
Bruce Hunter
Bruce Hunter is the author of seven books: a novel, In the Bear’s House (Oolichan Books, 2009), a short story collection, and five books of poetry including Two O’clock Creek – Poems New and Selected (Oolichan Books, 2011) which won the Acorn-Livesay-Plantos People’s Poetry Award. Deafened as an infant, Bruce taught for 25 years at Seneca College in Toronto and is now active in organizing events for writers and persons with disabilities.

Rosemary Griebel
Rosemary Griebel’s collection, Yes. (Frontenac House, 2011), was short-listed for the Gerald Lampert and the Pat Lowther awards, as well as the Stephan G. Stephansson award. Her poetry has appeared in The Best Canadian Poetry in English, as well as on CBC Radio, literary magazines, anthologies, chapbooks and on public buses. She is currently the Design Lead for Readers’ Services at Calgary Public Library.

Juleta Severson-Baker
Juleta Severson-Baker’s first book of poetry Incarnate (Frontenac House, 2013) was short-listed for both the 2013 Gerald Lampert Memorial Prize and the W.O. Mitchell City of Calgary book prize. Juleta is a speech arts instructor at the Mount Royal University Conservatory and is an active adjudicator of festivals as well as a 911 Emergency Communications Officer.

Joan Shillington
Joan Shillington’s second poetry collection Folding the Wilderness Within (Frontenac House 2014) was short-listed for the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Award. Her first collection is Revolutions (Leaf Press, 2004) and her poetry has appeared in Grain, Prairie Fire, Freefall, Antigonish Review, CV2, Fiddlehead and Room of One’s Own.

Chris Wiseman
Chris Wiseman’s 11 books include 36 Cornelian Avenue (Signal Editions, Véhicule Press, 2008), and In John Updike’s Room (The Porcupine’s Quill, 2005). Chris was born and educated in Britain, spent 3 years at the Iowa Writers Workshop, was co-founder of the Dept. of English Studies at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, and came to Calgary in 1969 where he was a Professor for 30 years before taking early retirement. He started the Creative Writing Program at the University of Calgary and taught many award winning writers. His poetry has won many awards at city, provincial and national levels.
