Za’atar is a spice mix typically containing dried thyme, oregano, sumac, and sesame seeds.
Homemade Za’atar
Ingredients
- 1/4 c (4 tbsp) sumac
- 2 tbsp thyme
- 1 tbsp roasted sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp marjoram (optional)
- 2 tbsp oregano
- 1 tsp course sea salt
Optional spice additions include summer savory, cumin, coriander, fennel seed, caraway seed, dried orange zest.
Uses
- Flavour breads: brush bread with olive oil or ghee, then sprinkle on za’atar spice mixture, or bake into flatbread.
- Flavour meats or vegetables: rub onto meat or toss into a salad. Consider roasting carrots or potatoes with oil and za’atar.
- Flavour sauces or dips: mix with olive oil or tahini to make a dip; sprinkle on hummus.
